Just started to do a bit of research on my family background. Sadly losing my father has left a big hole in my ability to learn a lot about our history. Had a bit more success on the software side though. First thoughts were about putting something together with Visio or even Word but realised thats not ideal. After a bit of trial and error and searching I came across ‘Family Tree Builder’ from My Heritage – http://www.myheritage.com/FP/Company/products.php . This appears to be an excellent free package that enables one to build a complete picture and produce polished reports. All I need now is the information!

Only available on the Mac, but GEditCom is the only really programmable piece of genealogy software out there. TO enable you to customise your inputs and produce a decent website.
Not free but not expensive either and well worth looking at
